Strawberry Banana Yogurt Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup Greek yogurt
1 medium banana (peeled)
3/4 cup fresh strawberries, hulled (5 large berries)
4 or 5 large ice cubes

Instructions

What's smoother than Greek yogurt? What's tastier than fresh strawberries? Add a banana and you have a smoothie that tastes like a dessert, but is full of calcium, fiber, potassium, and vitamins! This is our favorite strawberry banana smoothie recipe.

Add the yogurt first. Unless you have a very powerful blender (we use the fantastic Vitamix 750 and the Vitamix 5200), add 1/2 cup of water to help everything blend.

Add the fruit. If you're using frozen strawberries (they work just fine), skip the ice cubes but do add water or another liquid.

Blend to your desired consistency. We like our smoothies a little frothy, but for a creamier smoothie, let it sit for a while. (We can never wait that long.)

You can use any flavor or style of yogurt that you prefer, but our preference is always vanilla flavor (for the flavor, but honey is fine) and Greek yogurt (for the texture). For any recipe using vanilla yogurt, you can easily get away with Greek yogurt to add a little thickness and a not-so-sweet flavor. It's especially good in any fruit and yogurt smoothie; such a nice combination that unlocks the flavor of the fruit.

There are a thousand ways to enhance this recipe. Throw in fresh basil leaves for a little tang. Leave out the banana and you have yourself a strawberry yogurt smoothie. Add a touch of honey for sweetness (especially with plain yogurt). Pack in chia seeds for protein. Replace the ice cubes with frozen strawberries for a cool, refreshing summer drink.

We've even replaced the banana with a dollop of sour cream and a teaspoon full of balsamic vinegar. That gives the strawberry smoothie a real bite! (In general, as a replacement for the banana, you want something a little thick and mild in flavor. More yogurt would work here just fine, though you could go as far as adding a little powdered instant oatmeal to improve the thickness.)

Makes one large smoothie.
